OpenAI is reportedly unveiling a new ChatGPT search engine at an event on May 9, 2024. The AI company’s new search engine is an alternative to Google. Earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has talked about developing a search engine.
OpenAI’s new ChatGPT search engine could be more comprehensive than the one currently offered by search engines. Undoubtedly, OpenAI’s new search engine will pose a great challenge to Google’s search dominance.
OpenAI is launching a new search engine powered by ChatGPT
As per a recent post on Y Combinator’s Hacker News Community, OpenAI has registered a new domain name search.chatgpt.com, along with an SSL certificate. However, the domain currently doesn’t lead to anything, rather it says Not found.
Not to forget, Sam Altman was the ex-president of Y Combinator, a venture capital firm, that was an early investor in OpenAI.
Although there’s no concrete evidence on what this could mean, speculations have been brewing since the domain has been spotted. One such speculation is that OpenAI’s ChatGPT-powered search engine might go official in a few days.
An AI influencer named Pete Huang (@nonmayorpete) has recently hinted that the ChatGPT search engine might launch on May 9.
There are a few reports that are doing rounds online pointing toward the ChatGPT search engine launch.
What would OpenAI’s alternative to Google search be like?
By now you must have understood that with the new ChatGPT-powered search engine, OpenAI is competing directly with Google. But, what it could be like. Well, imagine a search engine like the one from Google, but with generative AI capabilities.
Yes, that’s exactly what OpenAI’s upcoming ChatGPT search engine would look like. While the basics would remain the same, the company will power it with ChatGPT. When a user inputs a query, the ChatGPT search engine might offer results including AI-generated snippets with relevant web pages.
This will enable users to access the source of the information directly for better context than just an AI summary.
It isn’t new that Google reigns the search engine market with approximately 91% share, with Microsoft Bing placed at the second spot. While Google is trying some AI features in its search to up its game, OpenAI is seemingly ready to take on the search engine leader with its ChatGPT search.
Time will tell if OpenAI lives up to users’ expectations with its ChatGPT search. But, one thing is sure in the coming days users will be using the new search engine, even if it is just out of curiosity.
