Microsoft's latest update patches the bug that caused VPNs to stop working

Earlier this month, we reported that a bug in the April’24 update broke the VPN functionality, affecting Windows 10, 11 and Server. Microsoft soon acknowledged the issue and has now released a patch for the broken VPN bug in Windows.

The release notes for the Windows 11 update, titled KB5037771 (OS Builds 22621.3593 and 22631.3593), read,

This update addresses a known issue that might cause your VPN connection to fail. This occurs after you install the update dated April 9, 2024, or later.

As for Windows 10 users, the KB5037768 update will patch the VPN bug, and for Windows Server, it’s the KB5037782 update!

To install the latest update in Windows 11, press Windows + I to open Settings > go to Windows Update from the navigation pane > click on Check for updates > wait for KB5037771 to download and install > restart the PC for the changes to come into effect.

Remember, the latest update introduces a new bug, as confirmed by Microsoft. After installation, you may be unable to change the user account’s profile picture. Instead, you get the 0x80070520 error and will have to resort to a workaround to change the account’s profile picture.

Not to forget, the KB5036893 update that introduced the broken VPN bug also caused a range of other issues in Windows 11, including slow boot time, random reboots, unresponsive taskbar and icons, and black screen errors. And Microsoft has yet to fix these problems!

Broken and buggy updates are one of the primary reasons for the decline in Windows 11’s market share, an aspect Microsoft must seriously look into.
